About Marv Grissom

Marvin Edward Grissom (1918-2005), a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher from Los Molinos, California, signed with the New York Giants after World War II, during which he served as an Army medic on Tinian Island in the Pacific. He debuted with the Giants in 1946 and, across ten major-league seasons, also pitched for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, compiling a 47-45 record with a 3.41 ERA, 58 saves and 459 strikeouts in 356 games. Grissom's finest year came in 1954, when he and Hoyt Wilhelm formed manager Leo Durocher's dominant bullpen; Grissom led the club with 17 saves, earned a National League All-Star selection, and helped New York win the pennant. In Game 1 of the 1954 World Series against Cleveland, he entered in the eighth inning immediately after Willie Mays' famous over-the-shoulder "Catch," threw 2⅔ innings of one-hit relief, and was the winning pitcher when Dusty Rhodes hit a walk-off three-run homer in the tenth. After retiring he spent roughly 15 years as a major-league pitching coach for the Angels, White Sox, Twins and Cubs. This card, #301, opens the scarcer high-number fourth series of the 1956 Topps set.
