About Vic Wertz

Signed by the Detroit Tigers in 1942 out of York, Pennsylvania, left-handed slugger Vic Wertz debuted in 1947 and played 17 major-league seasons (1947-1963) as an outfielder and first baseman for the Tigers, St. Louis Browns/Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins. A four-time All-Star, he was a genuine run producer, retiring with a .277 average, 1,692 hits, 266 home runs and 1,178 RBI over 1,862 games. Wertz is best remembered for the ball he hit in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series: a towering drive to the Polo Grounds' deep center field that Willie Mays hauled in over his shoulder in "The Catch," one of baseball's most famous defensive plays. Wertz nonetheless torched the Giants in that Series, batting .500 with a Series-leading 8 hits. In August 1955 he was stricken with polio, yet he returned in 1956 to belt a career-high 32 home runs. This card (#300) is a high number in the fourth series of the 1956 Topps set, picturing Wertz with the Indians, the club for which he starred in 1954.
