About Charlie Neal

Charles Lenard "Charlie" Neal (January 30, 1931 – November 18, 1996) was a slick-fielding infielder who reached the majors as a Brooklyn Dodger. A Longview, Texas native, he played semipro and Negro-leagues ball with the Atlanta Black Crackers before signing with the Dodgers organization around 1949–1950 and working his way up through the minors. Neal debuted on April 17, 1956—the year of this high-number Series 4 card—and spent his best seasons with the Dodgers (1956–1961), primarily at second base and shortstop. His signature year came in 1959: he made the All-Star team, won a Gold Glove at second base, and starred in the World Series, batting .370 (10-for-27) with two home runs off Bob Shaw in Game 2 to help the newly transplanted Los Angeles Dodgers capture their first title in their new city. A repeat All-Star in 1960, Neal was later traded to the expansion New York Mets (1962–1963) and finished with Cincinnati in 1963. Over eight seasons and 970 games he batted .259 with 858 hits, 87 home runs, and 391 RBI, respected for his speed and glovework even while overshadowed by more famous Dodger teammates.
