About Steve Gromek
Born January 15, 1920, in Hamtramck, Michigan, to Polish immigrant parents, Steve Gromek signed with the Cleveland Indians as an infielder and played second base and shortstop in the minors before a shoulder injury pushed him to the outfield; his strong throwing arm led to his conversion to pitcher in 1940. The right-hander debuted with Cleveland in 1941 and pitched 17 major-league seasons, going 123-108 with a 3.41 ERA and 904 strikeouts over 447 games. His finest year came in 1945, when he went 19-9 and earned his lone All-Star selection. Gromek started and won Game 4 of the 1948 World Series, beating the Boston Braves 2-1 as Cleveland won its last championship; the clubhouse photo of him cheek-to-cheek with Larry Doby, who homered for the winning margin, became one of the most iconic images of baseball's integration. Traded to the Detroit Tigers on June 15, 1953, he had his best Detroit season in 1954 (18-16). This card, #310, is a Series 4 high number. Gromek died in 2002.
