About Toby Atwell
Maurice Dailey "Toby" Atwell (March 8, 1924 - January 25, 2003) was a left-handed-hitting catcher from Leesburg, Virginia, who served in the U.S. military during World War II. He entered pro ball in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1946 and suffered a knee injury with Triple-A Montreal in 1949 before reaching the majors. Atwell debuted in 1952 with the Chicago Cubs and enjoyed his finest season as a rookie, batting .290 with 31 RBI over 107 games and earning a National League All-Star selection; rain halted that Philadelphia game after five innings before he got in. In June 1953 he went to the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of the ten-player deal that sent Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner to Chicago. He caught for Pittsburgh through 1956, finishing his five-season career with the Milwaukee Braves. Atwell hit .260 with 290 hits, 9 home runs and 110 RBI across 378 games.
