About Carl Erskine
Born December 13, 1926, in Anderson, Indiana, right-hander Carl Erskine signed with Brooklyn and debuted for the Dodgers on July 25, 1948. He spent his entire 12-season career (1948-1959) with the franchise in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, going 122-78 with a 4.00 ERA and 981 strikeouts. His best year came in 1953, when he won 20 games with a .769 winning percentage, earned his lone All-Star nod in 1954, and threw two no-hitters: June 19, 1952 against the Cubs and May 12, 1956 against the Giants. In Game 3 of the 1953 World Series he fanned 14 Yankees, breaking Howard Ehmke's single-game Series record, and he was a member of Brooklyn's 1955 world champions. Brooklyn fans dubbed him "Oisk," their borough-accented rendering of Erskine. Beloved for decades of Special Olympics advocacy, he received the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023 and died in 2024 at 97, the last surviving 1955 Dodgers champion.
