About Bill Mazeroski

Bill Mazeroski signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1954 at age 17 and spent his entire career, 1956 to 1972, as their second baseman. Widely regarded as the greatest defensive second baseman in history, "Maz" won eight Gold Gloves and turned a record 1,706 double plays; teammates called the sturdy infielder "Tree Stump" for the way sliding baserunners bounced off him. He is immortalized for a single swing: on October 13, 1960, leading off the bottom of the ninth in Game 7 of the World Series, he homered off the Yankees' Ralph Terry-the first walk-off home run ever to end a World Series and one of the most famous hits in baseball history. Mazeroski also earned numerous All-Star selections and collected 2,016 career hits. Elected by the Veterans Committee in 2001, he used his Hall of Fame speech to argue that "defense belongs in the Hall of Fame."
