About Bill Wight

Wight's 1958 Topps card, #237, pictures him with the Cincinnati Reds and belongs to the third series, between Ed Fitz Gerald and Bill Mazeroski. The Reds bought him from Baltimore after 1957 and planned to use him in relief, but they released him on May 20 after seven games. St. Louis signed him the next day as a lefty reliever, and he won three games without a loss for the Cardinals.

Bill Wight was a left-handed pitcher from Rio Vista, California, who signed with the Yankees out of Oakland's McClymonds High School and lost three seasons to Navy service in World War II. He pitched 12 major-league seasons for eight clubs: the Yankees, White Sox, Red Sox, Tigers, Indians, Orioles, Reds and Cardinals. His career record was 77-99 with a 3.95 ERA in 347 games. His best year came in 1949, when he won 15 games for a sixth-place White Sox club, and in 1950 he went hitless in 61 at-bats, a record for an American League player in a season. Opponents complained about his pickoff move to first base. Wight was also a skilled sketch artist who played chess on road trips. After playing he scouted for 37 years for Houston and Atlanta, signing Joe Morgan for the Astros in 1962. He died in Mount Shasta, California, in 2007.
