1958 Topps #236 Ed Fitz Gerald

About Ed Fitz Gerald
Fitz Gerald spent 1958 as a Washington Senators reserve, appearing in 58 games and hitting .263 in 114 at-bats, with 21 games behind the plate and five at first base. On June 27 his two-out double in the ninth broke up Billy Pierce's perfect-game bid for the Chicago White Sox. He had been with Washington since 1953 and would split 1959 between the Senators and Cleveland. His card is #236, printed in the third series of 1958 Topps, between Tom Gorman at #235 and Bill Wight at #237.
Ed Fitz Gerald was a right-handed catcher from Santa Ynez, California, who spent 12 major league seasons as a backup with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Senators and Cleveland Indians. A Saint Mary's College product and Army veteran of World War II, he reached Pittsburgh in 1948 from the Pacific Coast League and appeared in 102 games as a rookie. On May 6, 1951 he caught Cliff Chambers' no-hitter. Sold to Washington in 1953, he became the Senators' starter in 1954, batting .289 in a career-high 115 games. He later broke up Billy Pierce's perfect-game bid with a two-out, ninth-inning double in 1958. He ended with 807 games, 542 hits, 19 home runs and a .260 average, then coached in the American League from 1960 to 1964. The spelling Fitz Gerald, with a space, is how he signed his name.
