About Tom Gorman

Gorman spent 1958 with the Kansas City Athletics, working almost entirely out of the bullpen: 50 games, one start, 89 2/3 innings, a 4-4 record, 3.51 ERA and 8 saves. That was a step back from the 18 saves he had piled up for the club in 1955, but he was still a regular fixture in the bullpen in his fourth season in Kansas City. His card is 1958 Topps #235, part of the third series of the 494-card set, picturing him as an Athletic.

Tom Gorman was a right-handed pitcher, born in New York City in 1925 and raised in Valley Stream, Long Island. Listed at 6 feet 1 inch and 190 pounds, he pitched in the majors from 1952 to 1959 for the New York Yankees and the Kansas City Athletics. He reached the Yankees in 1952, going 6-2 in twelve games, and pitched in the World Series in both 1952 and 1953 as New York beat Brooklyn each time. In 1955 he moved to the Athletics in their first season in Kansas City, where he became a bullpen workhorse: 57 games and 18 saves, second in the American League. He worked mostly in relief, though only 33 of his 289 appearances were starts. He finished with a 36-36 record, a 3.77 ERA and 321 strikeouts in 689 1/3 innings. He died at his Valley Stream home in December 1992.
