About Dixie Howell

By the time this card was printed, Dixie Howell was a Chicago White Sox reliever coming off a 1957 in which he went 6-5 with a 3.29 ERA in 37 games. Card #421 sits in the fifth series of 1958 Topps, in the run just after Vada Pinson's rookie card. His big-league season was short: one scoreless outing for the White Sox in April.

Millard Filmore "Dixie" Howell was a right-handed relief pitcher from Harold, Kentucky, who grew up in Dehue, West Virginia. He came up through the Cleveland Indians farm system, struck out 20 batters in one Eastern League game in 1939 and then pitched three times for Cleveland in 1940. World War II interrupted his climb: he entered the Army in 1943, served in France and Belgium, and was held as a prisoner of war for six months before liberation. Back in the minors he won 14 games with the 1950 Minneapolis Millers and threw a no-hitter against Columbus. He spent 19 years in the minors overall, and only in 1955 did he return to the majors for good, as a White Sox relief specialist. That year he went 8-3 with a 2.93 ERA and nine saves, all career highs. He finished with a 19-15 record, 3.78 ERA and 19 saves in 115 games, and hit .243 with five home runs. He died in 1960 at age 40 while running at spring training.
