1958 Topps #422 Norm Zauchin

About Norm Zauchin
Zauchin opened 1958 in Washington after the January trade that sent him and Albie Pearson from Boston for Pete Runnels, finally getting regular playing time, and he was batting over .300 into mid-May. He finished with 15 homers and a .228 average in 96 games. His #422 in the 1958 Topps set, a fifth-series card, pictures him as a Senator.
Norbert Henry Zauchin, a 6-foot-4 first baseman from Royal Oak, Michigan, grew up near Briggs Stadium but signed with Boston after a Tigers scout failed to show up with a contract. He hit 35 homers for Birmingham in 1950, spent 1952 and 1953 in the Army, and broke through with the 1955 Red Sox: 27 home runs, 93 RBI, a .995 fielding percentage that led American League first basemen (tied with Walt Dropo), and third place in Rookie of the Year voting. On May 27, 1955, he drove in 10 runs with three homers and a double in a 16-0 win over Washington, a Red Sox record. Boston traded him and Albie Pearson to the Senators for Pete Runnels before 1958. He played his last major league game in 1959 and retired after a minor league season in 1960, finishing with 50 homers in 346 games. He is in the Royal Oak High School Hall of Fame.
