1958 Topps #423 Phil Clark

About Phil Clark
Clark's 1958 rookie season was a brief Cardinals bullpen stint: seven relief appearances, 7.2 innings, a 3.52 ERA, one save and an 0-1 record, after an April 15 debut against the Cubs. His 1958 Topps #423 shows him with the St. Louis Cardinals and is a single-player rookie card from Series Five, the fifth of six regular series in a 494-card set that also introduced the Sport Magazine All-Star cards.
Phil Clark was a right-handed pitcher from Albany, Georgia, born October 3, 1932. A 6-foot-3, 210-pound product of Albany High School and Georgia Southern, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent and spent his entire big-league time with them. He debuted on April 15, 1958, working two innings against the Cubs, and pitched his last game on April 29, 1959. In between he made 14 relief appearances, never starting a game, and finished 0-2 with a 7.98 ERA, six strikeouts in 14.2 innings and one save. At the plate he went hitless in his lone at-bat. He never reached the postseason or an All-Star team and is not in the Hall of Fame. Clark died September 14, 2018, in Nashville, Tennessee, and is buried in Albany.
