About Vada Pinson

Vada Edward Pinson (1938-1995) grew up in Oakland and starred at McClymonds High School before signing with the Cincinnati Redlegs. He debuted in 1958 and served as the Reds' center fielder for 11 seasons (1958-1968), later playing for the Cardinals, Indians, Angels, and Royals. A swift, all-around player, Pinson was a four-time All-Star and a Gold Glove winner (1961) who blended power and speed, retiring with 2,757 hits, 256 home runs, 305 stolen bases, and a .286 average. He led the National League in hits, doubles, and triples at various points and reached the 1961 World Series with Cincinnati. In Cincinnati he teamed with fellow Oakland native Frank Robinson, who called him his first close friend in baseball. Despite career totals that rank among the highest of any outfielder outside the Hall of Fame, Pinson was never elected to Cooperstown.
