About the 1958 Milwaukee Braves

The Milwaukee Braves were reigning champions when this card appeared: they went 95-59 in 1957 and beat the Yankees in a seven-game World Series for the franchise's first title in Milwaukee. In 1958 they repeated as National League pennant winners at 92-62 before losing a seven-game rematch to New York. The roster was loaded - outfielder Hank Aaron, the 1957 NL MVP; slugging third baseman Eddie Mathews; and left-hander Warren Spahn, the 1957 Cy Young Award winner. Card #377 carries a series checklist on its reverse, and Milwaukee is among the teams also found with players listed alphabetically - part of Topps's new-for-1958 team-card checklists.

Variations & how to tell them apart

Team checklist-back variation #377

The four Series-5 team cards each exist with two backs: an alphabetical roster (the base/common version) and a numerical Series-6 checklist. The numerical back is the recognized scarcer/premium version (PSA, 2017: Tigers and Orioles numerical backs each fewer than 10 in PSA 8, none higher). Which printed first is undocumented.

  • #377 — base card: the back lists the entire set ALPHABETICALLY (A-Z) — the base, more common version. (this page)
  • #377B — Numerical Back: the back carries the team's NUMERICAL Series-6 checklist — the recognized scarcer, premium back.
