About Charley Rabe

Rabe opened 1958 on the Cincinnati staff and pitched in nine games, going 0-3 with a 4.34 earned run average over 18.2 innings. His second and last start came May 25 against St. Louis at Crosley Field, a three-inning outing in a 4-2 loss. This is his rookie card, #376 in the fifth series of 1958 Topps, listed as a Cincinnati pitcher. It sits one number before the Milwaukee Braves team card, #377, one of four team cards in that series that also turn up with an alphabetical checklist back.

Charley Rabe was a left-handed pitcher from Boyce, Texas, a graduate of Waxahachie High School, the same school that produced baseball executive Paul Richards. He began his professional career in the Cincinnati organization in 1952 and spent twelve years in pro ball, ten of them active seasons, finishing in 1963. His big-league time came entirely with the Cincinnati Redlegs in 1957 and 1958, eleven games in all. After a 16-10 year for the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League, he was called up in September 1957 and made a start at Milwaukee, going seven innings against the eventual world champion Braves in a 2-1 loss to Lew Burdette. He finished with an 0-4 record, a 3.67 earned run average, 16 strikeouts and nine walks in 27 innings, then returned to the minors for the rest of his career.
