1958 Topps #375 Pee Wee Reese

About Pee Wee Reese
Harold Henry "Pee Wee" Reese (1918-1999) was born in Meade County, Kentucky, and earned his nickname not from his size but from his skill as a boyhood marbles champion, a "pee wee" being a type of marble. Acquired by the Brooklyn Dodgers, the shortstop debuted in 1940 and, after wartime Navy service, anchored the Dodger infield for over a decade. Named team captain in 1950, Reese was a 10-time All-Star who helped Brooklyn win seven pennants and its only World Series championship in 1955. He is also remembered for publicly supporting Jackie Robinson during Robinson's groundbreaking rookie season. Known too as "the Little Colonel," a nod to his Kentucky roots and his minor league days with the Louisville Colonels, Reese batted .269 with 2,170 hits, all with the Dodgers. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1984.
