About Brooks Lawrence

Lawrence's 1958 Topps card is #374, a Series Five card that shows him with Cincinnati in a 494-card set, the first to carry the Sport Magazine All-Star Selection subset. Coming off a 16-13 season, he slipped to 8-13 with a 4.13 ERA in 46 games, 23 of them starts, and picked up five saves. Two years earlier he had led the Redlegs in wins, and this card catches him in the slide that ended his career in 1960.

Brooks Lawrence, a right-hander from Springfield, Ohio, reached the majors at 29 after a long road. He was the first Black quarterback in his high school's history, earned a Bronze Star as an Army engineer in the Pacific, and studied at Miami University before signing with Cleveland. Mickey Owen mentored him in Puerto Rican winter ball, where he added a sinker, slider and change-up. The Cardinals drafted him and he debuted in June 1954 with a win over Pittsburgh, finishing 15-6. Traded to Cincinnati, he had his best year in 1956, opening 13-0 on the way to 19-10 and a National League All-Star selection. He won 16 in 1957 and left the game in 1960 at 69-62 with a 4.25 ERA over 275 games. Afterward he worked for the Reds, coached Wilmington College baseball from 1988 to 1993, and worked with the Baseball Assistance Team. He is in the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame (1976) and the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame, among others.
