1958 Topps #289 Series Hurling Rivals - Lou Burdette / Bobby Shantz
One of the nine multi-player combination cards in the 1958 set — the format Topps had introduced a year earlier with the 1957 Dodgers' Sluggers and Yankees' Power Hitters.

About this card
Topps paired two pitchers from the 1957 World Series on 1958 Topps #289, a combination card in the fourth series of the 494-card set. The title, Series Hurling Rivals, says it plainly: Lou Burdette of the Milwaukee Braves and Bobby Shantz of the New York Yankees, opposing arms from the Series just played. Burdette was that Series' Most Valuable Player, winning three complete games, two of them shutouts, as Milwaukee beat the Yankees for the only championship in Milwaukee history. He won 17 games in the regular season. Shantz, acquired from the Kansas City Athletics in February 1957, led all major league pitchers with a 2.45 ERA that year, went 11-5 with five saves, and pitched in relief in three Series games. Combination cards were used more widely in 1958, and this one sets the National League champions' Series hero beside the American League club's ERA leader.
