1958 Topps #288 Harmon Killebrew

About Harmon Killebrew
Harmon Killebrew signed with the Washington Senators as a "bonus baby" in 1954 after a U.S. senator recommended the teenage slugger. Still a seldom-used reserve in 1958, he broke out in 1959 with 42 home runs to share the American League lead-the first of six home-run titles. When the Senators moved to Minnesota in 1961, Killebrew became the cornerstone of the Twins, and in 1965 he helped them win the pennant before a seven-game World Series loss to the Dodgers. He was the 1969 AL MVP, clubbing 49 homers with 140 RBIs. One of the most feared right-handed power hitters of his era, Killebrew was widely known as "Killer"-a nickname biographers note ill-suited his famously gentle nature. He retired in 1975 with 573 home runs, then fifth on the all-time list, and 1,584 RBIs, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984.
