1958 Topps #385 Wilmer Mizell

About Wilmer Mizell
Mizell went 10-14 with a 3.42 ERA in 30 games for the Cardinals, 29 of them starts, and struck out only 80 in 189.2 innings while walking 91. On September 1 he beat Cincinnati's Joe Nuxhall 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader, walking nine, a National League record for a shutout. His card is #385 in the fifth series of the 494-card 1958 Topps set, shown with St. Louis.
Wilmer Mizell was a left-handed pitcher from Leakesville, Mississippi, who took his famous nickname from nearby Vinegar Bend, Alabama, where he first pitched in Sunday leagues. Signed by the Cardinals out of high school in 1949, he struck out 257 batters for Houston in 1951 and reached St. Louis in 1952. He won 10 games that year and 13 the next, and led the National League in strikeouts per nine innings both seasons, though walks were a constant problem. Two years of Army service followed, after which he came back to win 14 games in 1956 and 14 again in 1960, his best totals. He was named to the 1959 National League All-Star team. St. Louis traded him to Pittsburgh in May 1960, and he helped the Pirates beat the Yankees in that year's World Series. He finished with the Mets in 1962 with 90 career wins, then turned to politics and served three terms in Congress from North Carolina.
