About Barry Latman

Latman's solo 1961 card, #560, is a series-7 high number. It reports his first year in Cleveland, where he had landed the previous April 18 when White Sox manager Al Lopez, who had managed Herb Score with the Indians, traded to get the left-hander back. Latman split that 1960 season between the rotation and the bullpen, working 31 games and finishing 7-7 with a 4.03 ERA.

Arnold Barry Latman was a broad-shouldered right-hander from Los Angeles who pitched eleven major league seasons, 1957-1967, for the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles/California Angels and Houston Astros. He threw a perfect game for Fairfax High School in 1954, and Ty Cobb, who had seen him pitch on television, began a five-year correspondence telling him he had the stuff for the majors. Latman signed with the White Sox in 1955 while attending USC, and was nicknamed 'Shoulders' for his build. Cleveland acquired him in April 1960 in a straight swap for left-hander Herb Score, and he repaid the deal in 1961 by winning his first nine decisions, going 13-5 and earning his only All-Star selection. He finished 59-68 with a 3.91 ERA and 829 strikeouts in 344 games. An observant Jew who would not pitch on the High Holidays, he was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He died in Richmond, Texas, in 2019 at age 82.
