About Bill Mazeroski

Both of Mazeroski's 1961 cards look back on the championship season of 1960: a .273 average with 11 home runs and 64 RBI, a second Gold Glove, and a start in each of the two All-Star Games while Pittsburgh went 95-59 for its first pennant in 33 years. He carried the August run that settled the race, hitting .373 with 16 RBI and a 26-game errorless streak. Card #430 is a fifth-series base card. Card #571 lands in the seventh series as a high number and salutes him on the Sporting News All-Star team. Both rate as key cards for the year.

William Stanley Mazeroski spent his entire 17-year career (1956-1972) at second base for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who signed him in 1954 out of high school in Tiltonsville, Ohio. Broadcaster Bob Prince took to calling him simply "The Glove," and the name fit: a ten-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner, he turned 1,706 double plays, still the major league career record for a second baseman. He is remembered above all for one swing. Leading off the bottom of the ninth of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series with the score tied 9-9, he drove a Ralph Terry pitch over the left-field wall at Forbes Field to beat the New York Yankees, the only walk-off home run ever to end a World Series in Game 7. He hit .320 in that Series and won the Babe Ruth Award for it. Eleven years later he and Roberto Clemente, the last two men left from the 1960 club, took a second title from Baltimore. Mazeroski coached for the Pirates and the Seattle Mariners, saw his number 9 retired in 1987, and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 2001, chosen for his glove more than his bat. He died February 20, 2026, in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, at 89.
