About Gino Cimoli

Card #165 is a series-2 base issue from Cimoli's only full season in Pittsburgh: 101 games and a .267 average as the fourth outfielder, though he started Games 2 through 6 of the World Series in left field once Bob Skinner was hurt. Pinch-hitting for Roy Face to lead off the eighth inning of Game 7, he singled, advanced on Bill Virdon's bad-hop grounder and scored on Dick Groat's hit, igniting the rally that put the Pirates back in front.

Gino Cimoli was a right-handed-hitting outfielder from San Francisco who broke in with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956 and played ten major league seasons, 1956 through 1965, for seven clubs: the Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Braves, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Angels. His first full season, 1957, was his best: a .293 average, 156 hits and a National League All-Star selection. Cimoli owns two pieces of Dodgers history. He scored the final run at Ebbets Field on September 24, 1957, in Brooklyn's last home game there, and on April 15, 1958, manager Walter Alston sent the North Beach native up as the first batter in a major league game played on the West Coast. He appeared in the 1956 World Series with Brooklyn and won a title with the 1960 Pirates. He finished with a .265 average, 808 hits, 321 RBI and more triples (48) than home runs (44), then drove a UPS delivery route in San Francisco for more than two decades, honored in 1990 for 21 years without a traffic accident.
