About this card

This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1961 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Topps' 1961 combination card sets the Pirates' two pitching stars side by side: Vern Law and Roy Face, billed as the Buc Hill Aces - Buc for the Bucs, hill for the pitcher's mound. The pairing is pure 1960. Law started and Face finished for the team that took Pittsburgh's first pennant in 33 years and then beat the Yankees in seven games. Law had just won the Cy Young Award, then took Games 1 and 4 of that World Series; Face saved Games 1, 4 and 5, the first pitcher credited with three saves in one Fall Classic. Card 250 falls in the set's third series - Law debuted for Pittsburgh in 1950 and Face in 1953.

Vern Law was Pittsburgh's ace and the first Pirate to win a Cy Young Award, going 20-9 in 1960 and winning two World Series starts on a badly sprained ankle before a shoulder injury and a 1965 comeback shaped the rest of his career. Roy Face was Pittsburgh's pioneering forkball reliever, whose 18-1 season in 1959 produced the highest single-season winning percentage in major league history; he closed out three games in the 1960 World Series and retired with 193 saves.
