About Harvey Haddix

This first-series card, #100 in the 1961 Topps set, catches Haddix a few months after the biggest win of his life. He went 11-10 with a 3.97 ERA over 28 starts for the 1960 Pirates, then went 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in the World Series against the Yankees. He won Game 5, 5-2, to put Pittsburgh up three games to two, and he was on the mound in relief in Game 7 when Bill Mazeroski's ninth-inning homer ended it, handing Haddix the win.

Harvey Haddix was a left-handed pitcher who spent 14 seasons in the majors with the Cardinals, Phillies, Redlegs, Pirates, and Orioles from 1952 to 1965. Listed at 5-foot-9, the wiry lefty picked up the nickname 'Kitten' at Triple-A Columbus, where general manager George Sisler Jr. likened him to Cardinals left-hander Harry Brecheen, known as 'The Cat.' He had his best year in 1953, going 20-9 with a 3.06 ERA, 19 complete games, and a league-leading six shutouts. An All-Star from 1953 through 1955, he won three straight Gold Gloves from 1958 to 1960. He is best remembered for pitching 12 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Braves on May 26, 1959, before losing the no-hitter and the game in the 13th. He finished 136-113 with a 3.63 ERA and 1,575 strikeouts and won two World Series rings with Pittsburgh, one as a player in 1960 and one as pitching coach in 1979. After his last playing season in 1965 he coached pitchers for the Mets, Reds, Red Sox, Indians, and Pirates through 1984. A heavy smoker, Haddix developed emphysema and died in Springfield, Ohio, in 1994 at age 68.
