About Dick Stuart

Topps put Stuart at #126 in the 1961 set's second series, a Pirates first baseman fresh off the championship he helped win. Pittsburgh took the 1960 pennant by seven games and then upset the Yankees in the World Series; Stuart hit .260 with 23 home runs and 83 RBIs that year, went 3-for-20 with no runs or RBIs in the Series itself, and was kneeling in the on-deck circle as a pinch hitter when Bill Mazeroski's ninth-inning home run off Ralph Terry ended it.

Dick Stuart was a right-handed slugging first baseman who played in the majors from 1958 to 1969 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels, with two seasons in Japan for the Taiyo Whales in between. Born in San Francisco and raised in San Carlos, he turned down two college scholarships to sign with Pittsburgh in June 1951 for a $10,000 bonus out of Sequoia High School in Redwood City. In the minors he set a Western League record with 66 home runs for the 1956 Lincoln Chiefs, and he reached Pittsburgh in July 1958, homering in his first big league game. He was the Pirates' regular first baseman for the 1960 World Series champions, made both National League All-Star squads in 1961, and led the American League with 118 RBIs for Boston in 1963, the year he became the first player to hit 30 home runs in a season in both leagues. His bat never covered for his glove: he led his league in errors by a first baseman seven straight years, which brought the nicknames Dr. Strangeglove and Stone Fingers. He retired with 228 home runs, 743 RBIs and a .264 average.
