1961 Topps #546 Marty Kutyna

About Marty Kutyna
Washington landed him on December 29, 1960, sending catcher Haywood Sullivan to Kansas City, and Kutyna turned into a workhorse for the brand-new Senators in their first season. He got into 50 games, six of them starts, and logged a career-high 143 innings, going 6-8 with three saves and a 3.97 ERA for a club that went 61-100 in its only year at Griffith Stadium. Card #546 is a high number from the seventh series, and high numbers are the hardest stretch of this set to finish. By 1961 he had already pitched in parts of three big-league seasons.
Marion John Kutyna, born in Philadelphia on November 14, 1932, was a right-handed pitcher who came out of the city's North Catholic High School and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1953. He broke in fast, winning 17 games in his first professional season and 18 in his second, but he never reached the majors as a Cardinal: on December 5, 1957, St. Louis packaged him off to the Cincinnati Redlegs in the trade that brought young center fielder Curt Flood to the Cardinals. Kutyna kept grinding through the minors for nearly seven years before he finally debuted on September 19, 1959, with the Kansas City Athletics. He worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen, drawing only six starting assignments in his whole career and never finishing one, and he pitched the entire 1960 season for Kansas City before a trade sent him to the expansion Washington Senators. He closed out his playing days with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons in 1963, leaving a four-season major league record of 14-16 with a 3.88 ERA, 110 strikeouts and eight saves in 159 games.
