1962 Topps #401 AL & NL Homer Kings
On this card: Roger Maris, Orlando Cepeda

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards in the set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card - Managers' Dream (#18, Mantle and Mays), AL & NL Homer Kings (#401, Maris and Cepeda) and Rival League Relief Aces (#423, Face and Wilhelm) among them.
The story on this card
Topps called #401 "AL & NL Homer Kings," and the title is literal: it pairs the two men who had just led their leagues in home runs, Roger Maris of the Yankees and Orlando Cepeda of the Giants. Maris hit 61 in 1961 to pass the 60 Babe Ruth hit in 1927, finishing it in the season's last game off Boston's Tracy Stallard. Cepeda led the National League with 46 home runs and 142 RBIs and finished runner-up in the Most Valuable Player voting. Topps had already run both races on its first-series league leaders cards, so this fifth-series meeting of the two champions is the victory lap. It is a combination card.
Roger Maris - the Yankees right fielder who broke Babe Ruth's single-season home run record with 61 in 1961, a back-to-back American League MVP and three-time World Series champion in New York and St. Louis. He is not in Cooperstown. Orlando Cepeda, the Baby Bull, was a powerful Puerto Rican first baseman who won Rookie of the Year with the 1958 Giants and the unanimous NL MVP with the 1967 champion Cardinals.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
