1962 Topps #139c Babe Ruth Special: Babe Hits 60
Number 139 was shared by three different 1962 Topps cards -- two poses of Yankees pitcher Hal Reniff plus this Babe Ruth tribute -- which collectors separate with letter suffixes. Reniff's portrait also turns up at his intended number, 159.
Printed #139 carries three different cards: #139a Hal Reniff; #139b Hal Reniff; #139c Babe Ruth Special: Babe Hits 60 (this card). Each is listed and tracked on its own here, lettered the way the hobby catalogs them.

About this card
Cards #135-144 are the ten-card Babe Ruth Special, a tribute run printed inside the green-tint series that follows Ruth from Babe As A Boy (#135) to his Farewell Speech (#144). #137 pairs him with manager Miller Huggins and #140 with Lou Gehrig; #141 lists the 1935 Boston Braves and #142 the 1938 Brooklyn Dodgers he coached; and Babe Hits 60 shares printed #139 with two Hal Reniff cards, so it is catalogued 139c.
The story on this card
This is entry five of the ten-card Babe Ruth Special subset, numbers 135 through 144, that Topps ran inside its 1962 second series -- a tribute issued the year after Roger Maris broke Ruth's single-season home run record amid argument over the longer 162-game schedule. Babe Hits 60 recalls the 60 homers Ruth hit for the New York Yankees in 1927. When second-series demand outran the Philadelphia printer's run, Topps sent the plates to a second shop in upstate New York. They were damaged in transit, the series had to be reprinted, and a magenta printing problem left the green cast collectors call the Green Tint.
Babe Ruth was baseball's original superstar, a Red Sox pitching ace turned Yankees slugger who led the American League in home runs twelve times, hit 60 in 1927 for Murderers' Row, and won the 1923 Most Valuable Player award.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation; slabs whose label names no variation are listed as not designated. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1962 Topps #139c card?
It is card #139c of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees. Three different cards were printed #139; this is the Babe Ruth Special: Babe Hits 60.
Does 1962 Topps #139c have variations?
Yes. Two states are catalogued and tracked separately: 139ca - Babe Hits 60 (The standard second-series printing: Ruth finishes his swing standing on dirt, with no foul pole in the background) and 139cb - Babe Hits 60-Green Tint (The Green Tint reprint, where the same scene comes back all green grass with a hazy foul pole showing at the left). Owning any one of them fills the #139c slot; the master set counts each state.
Why are there three cards numbered #139 in 1962 Topps?
Number 139 was shared by three different 1962 Topps cards -- two poses of Yankees pitcher Hal Reniff plus this Babe Ruth tribute -- which collectors separate with letter suffixes. Reniff's portrait also turns up at his intended number, 159. Each is listed and tracked on its own here, lettered the way the hobby catalogs them.
How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?
600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
