The story on this card
Card 144 closes out the ten-card Babe Ruth Special run of 1962 Topps series 2 with the Farewell Speech tribute, recalling June 13, 1948, when a cancer-stricken Ruth returned to Yankee Stadium as the club retired his uniform number 3 and sent it on to Cooperstown on the ballpark's 25th-anniversary day. A crowd of 49,641 turned out on a raw, drizzly afternoon; Cleveland first baseman Eddie Robinson had handed him Bob Feller's bat to lean on, and in a muted, croaking voice Ruth said how proud he was to have hit the first home run ever struck in the Stadium. He never went back, and died two months later on August 16. Collectors chase the card in two states, one with the green tint and one without.
Babe Ruth was baseball's original superstar, a Red Sox pitching ace turned Yankees slugger who led the American League in home runs twelve times, hit 60 in 1927 for Murderers' Row, and won the 1923 Most Valuable Player award.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
