1962 Topps #580 Bill Monbouquette

About Bill Monbouquette
Number 580 is another seventh-series high number, which put this Red Sox portrait among the last 1962 Topps cards to reach candy counters. It follows a 1961 season in which every one of Monbouquette's 32 appearances was a start: he completed 12, struck out 161 and posted a 3.39 ERA over 236 innings, yet finished even at 14-14, partly because six of his losses were one-run games. Those 14 wins left him one behind teammate Don Schwall. High numbers like this one are the cards Boston set builders chase last.
William Charles Monbouquette, a Medford, Massachusetts, right-hander known as Monbo, signed with his hometown Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1955 and debuted on July 18, 1958. A workhorse with pinpoint control, he carried Boston rotations through the early 1960s on mostly second-division clubs, was named an American League All-Star in 1960, 1962 and 1963, and set a Red Sox record with a 17-strikeout game against Washington in 1961. His signature moment came on August 1, 1962, when he no-hit the Chicago White Sox 1-0 at Comiskey Park; a second-inning walk to Al Smith was the only baserunner he allowed. A 20-game winner in 1963, he went 96-91 in eight seasons with Boston before an October 1965 trade sent him to Detroit. Released by the Tigers in May 1967, he caught on with the New York Yankees and closed his career with the San Francisco Giants in 1968, finishing 114-112 with a 3.68 ERA, 78 complete games and 1,122 strikeouts. He later coached in the New York Mets system and served as their major-league pitching coach in 1982 and 1983. Boston elected him to the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2000.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Data as of 2026-09-04. PSA counts are straight grades only; PSA half grades (PSA 1.5 among them) and qualified slabs are not included. SGC half grades fold down (8.5→8). Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1962 Topps #580 card?
It is card #580 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Bill Monbouquette of the Boston Red Sox.
Why is #580 harder to find?
It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh and last print series - the toughest run in the set, home to all 42 short prints and the eight-card Rookie Parade.
How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?
600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
