1962 Topps #539 Billy Moran

About Billy Moran
Card #539 lands in Topps' seventh series, a high number, and pictures Moran with the Los Angeles Angels. The 1962 season was his breakout: the Angels' regular second baseman started 159 of the team's 162 games, hit .282 with 17 home runs and 74 RBIs, and piled up a league-best 422 putouts at the position. The players elected him the starting American League second baseman for both All-Star Games that summer, ahead of Bobby Richardson. His 186 hits stood as the Angels' club record until 1970, and on April 19 he became the first American Leaguer to homer at Dodger Stadium, a two-out, two-run walk-off off the Athletics' Dave Wickersham.
William Nelson Moran, born November 27, 1933 in Montgomery, Alabama, was a right-handed-hitting second baseman who spent seven seasons in the majors with the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels. An only child, he learned the game from his semipro-pitcher father, and after the family moved to Atlanta he signed with Cleveland scout Joe Sewell out of Russell High School in East Point, Georgia, in 1952. Four minor-league seasons and two years of Army duty at Fort McPherson later, he debuted with the Indians on Opening Day 1958, singling in his first plate appearance. Cleveland sold him to the Triple-A Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League in 1960, and Toronto traded him to the expansion Angels in June 1961 for Ken Hamlin and Russ Heman. He became the club's regular second baseman in 1962, an All-Star season in which the young franchise finished third at 86-76. He stayed a mainstay of the Angels' infield through 1963 before losing the job to a rookie in 1964 and finishing up as a utility infielder back in Cleveland. He batted .263 for his career with 28 home runs and 202 RBIs over 634 games. He died October 21, 2021, at 87, in Fort Myers, Florida.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1962 Topps #539 card?
It is card #539 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Billy Moran of the Los Angeles Angels.
Why is #539 harder to find?
It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade.
How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?
600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
