1962 Topps #508 Gordy Coleman

About Gordy Coleman
The sixth series of the 1962 set carries Coleman at #508, printed off the best year of his career. He hit .287 with 26 home runs, tied with Gene Freese for second on the club behind Frank Robinson's 37, and a career-high 87 RBI, starting 140 of the Reds' 154 games at first base with a .991 fielding percentage as Cincinnati won its first pennant since 1940. In Game Two of the World Series at Yankee Stadium he hit a two-run homer off Ralph Terry in the Reds' only win, 6-2.
Gordon Calvin Coleman, born July 5, 1934, in Rockville, Maryland, lettered in four sports at Richard Montgomery High School, took a football scholarship to Duke, and signed with Cleveland in 1953 after a single year there. Army service at Fort McPherson cost him 1957 and 1958, and he came back to win the 1959 Southern Association Triple Crown and MVP award at Mobile. He debuted with the Indians that September, then went to Cincinnati in December with Billy Martin and Cal McLish in the trade for Johnny Temple. A left-handed hitter with a foot-in-the-bucket stance, Coleman held first base for the Reds from 1961 through 1963, then shared it with Deron Johnson, Tony Perez and Lee May as injuries cut into his playing time. His .338 career pinch-hitting average, 49 hits in 145 at-bats, stands as the best by any player who pinch-hit at least 100 times. Coleman finished at .273 with 98 home runs, joined the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1972 and stayed with the club as speakers bureau director and, from 1990, a broadcaster, until his death on March 12, 1994.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
