About Jose Pagan

A seventh-series high number, #565 reached collectors in the last packs of 1962, by which time Pagan had put in a full year at shortstop: 164 games there, every one a start. The Giants and Dodgers finished the schedule tied at 101 wins, and in the deciding playoff game he reached on Larry Burright's error to push across the last run of a four-run ninth that carried San Francisco to the pennant.

Jose Pagan was a Puerto Rican infielder who played fifteen major league seasons, 1959 to 1973, for the San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Philadelphia Phillies. Signed by the New York Giants in 1955 out of the Santurce club in Puerto Rico's winter league, he spent two seasons shuttling to the minors before Alvin Dark made him San Francisco's starting shortstop in 1961. His best year came in 1962, when he played 164 games at short, batted .259 with career highs of 150 hits, 73 runs and 57 RBI, then hit .368 with a home run in a World Series the Giants lost to the Yankees in seven games. Pittsburgh acquired him in a May 1965 trade and turned him into a bench man at third base, shortstop and left field. In Game Seven of the 1971 World Series he doubled home Willie Stargell with the run that decided the championship. He finished at .250 with 922 hits, coached for the Phillies and then the Pirates through 1978, managed in Puerto Rico and the minors, and was later named to the Puerto Rico Sports Hall of Fame. He died in 2011 in Sebring, Florida.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1962 Topps #565 card?

It is card #565 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Jose Pagan of the San Francisco Giants.

Why is #565 harder to find?

It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade.

How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?

600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
