1962 Topps #485 Pedro Ramos

About Pedro Ramos
Card #485, a series-6 issue, shows Ramos in a Cleveland uniform: the Twins traded him to the Indians on April 2, 1962 for Vic Power and Dick Stigman. It follows his lone Minnesota season, 11-20 with a 3.95 ERA over 264.1 innings, a fourth consecutive year atop the American League loss column. That year had opened with the franchise's first game as the Twins - a three-hit, 6-0 shutout at Yankee Stadium on April 11, 1961, in which he also drove in two runs with his bat.
Pedro Ramos Guerra was a Cuban-born right-hander who pitched fifteen major-league seasons between 1955 and 1970 for the Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and the expansion Washington Senators, finishing 117-160 with a 4.08 ERA and 1,305 strikeouts. He broke in with Washington at nineteen in 1955 and worked 200 or more innings six years running from 1957 through 1962 - durability that also left him leading the American League in losses four straight seasons, 1958 through 1961, with 18, 19, 18 and 20 defeats. His lone All-Star selection came in 1959. Nicknamed "The Cuban Cowboy" for a gunslinger persona rooted in his rural Pinar del Rio upbringing, he dressed in lace-trimmed black cowboy outfits modeled on his screen idols the Lone Ranger and Hopalong Cassidy. He repeatedly challenged Mickey Mantle to footraces the slugger never accepted, and he served the pitch Mantle drove off the Yankee Stadium facade on May 30, 1956. A Cienfuegos star in Cuba's winter league, Rookie of the Year in 1955-56 and MVP in 1960-61, he was elected in 1983 to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame, by then seated in Miami.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
