About Tom Haller

Card #356 sits in Topps' fourth series and is Haller's recognized rookie card -- a plain number. It pictures him with the San Francisco Giants in his breakout year. Splitting the catching with Ed Bailey, he hit .261 with 18 home runs and 55 RBI in 99 games, started 13 of the 18 games against Los Angeles and gunned down 36 percent of would-be base stealers. The two rivals tied for first, San Francisco won the three-game playoff, and Haller homered off Whitey Ford in Game Four of a World Series the Yankees took in seven.

Tom Haller was a catcher who spent twelve major league seasons (1961-1972), most of them as the primary receiver for the San Francisco Giants before finishing with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers. Born in Lockport, Illinois, on June 23, 1937, he starred as a football quarterback at the University of Illinois, then signed with the Giants in 1958 and spent three seasons in their farm system before debuting in April 1961. Known for a strong throwing arm, sure hands and a reputation as an unusually cerebral game-caller, he earned three straight All-Star selections from 1966 through 1968 and caught staffs built around Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. He finished with a .257 average, 134 home runs and 504 RBI in 1,294 games. His older brother Bill became an American League umpire, and in July 1972 the two worked the same game as catcher and plate umpire, the first time brothers had done so. After retiring he returned to the Giants as a coach, farm director and vice president of baseball operations, and later served as general manager of the Chicago White Sox. He died in Los Angeles in 2004, and in 2008 was named to the inaugural class of the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
