About this card

Cards #232-237 tell the 1961 World Series - the Yankees over the Reds - game by game, Games 1 through 5 plus a summary card of the winners celebrating. Three captions name the man pictured: Joey Jay (#233), Roger Maris (#234) and Whitey Ford (#235).

The story on this card

The World Series subset ends with the celebration, and the Yankees earned it at Crosley Field on October 9, 1961, burying Cincinnati 13-5 to close the Series in five. With Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra hurt, John Blanchard started in right field, batted cleanup, and opened the scoring with a two-run homer off Joey Jay in a five-run first. Frank Robinson's three-run shot cut it to 6-3, but Hector Lopez answered with a three-run homer in a five-run fourth and finished the day with five runs batted in. Fred Hutchinson used eight pitchers and 21 players, both Series single-game records. It was New York's nineteenth championship, and Whitey Ford, whose scoreless World Series streak reached 32 innings and passed Babe Ruth's record before an ankle injury ended his Game 4, was named Series MVP.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
