1963 Topps #426 Barry Latman

About Barry Latman
Topps' 1963 set catches Latman coming off a losing year: 8-13 with a 4.17 ERA in 45 games for Cleveland. The low point came on a Wednesday afternoon in Minnesota on July 18, when he started and the Twins put up eleven runs in the first inning. Bob Allison's grand slam came off Latman and Harmon Killebrew's off reliever Jim Perry, the first time in the modern era a team hit two slams in one inning. His solo card #426 is a series-5 issue.
Arnold Barry Latman was a broad-shouldered right-hander from Los Angeles who pitched eleven major league seasons, 1957-1967, for the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles/California Angels and Houston Astros. He threw a perfect game for Fairfax High School in 1954, and Ty Cobb, who had seen him pitch on television, began a five-year correspondence telling him he had the stuff for the majors. Latman signed with the White Sox in 1955 while attending USC, and was nicknamed 'Shoulders' for his build. Cleveland acquired him in April 1960 in a straight swap for left-hander Herb Score, and he repaid the deal in 1961 by winning his first nine decisions, going 13-5 and earning his only All-Star selection. He finished 59-68 with a 3.91 ERA and 829 strikeouts in 344 games. An observant Jew who would not pitch on the High Holidays, he was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He died in Richmond, Texas, in 2019 at age 82.
