1963 Topps #152 Ron Nischwitz

About Ron Nischwitz
Card #152 is a second-series card. It catches Nischwitz in Cleveland livery after the Tigers sent him and Gordon Seyfried to the Indians for Bubba Phillips in November 1962. The move did not take: he lasted only 14 games and 16 2/3 innings for Cleveland, going 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA, the highest of his four big-league seasons. He spent all of 1964 out of the majors and would not pitch in another big-league game until 1965.
Ronald Lee Nischwitz, born July 1, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio, was a switch-hitting, left-handed relief pitcher who attended Fairview High School and Ohio State University before signing with the Detroit Tigers as an amateur free agent in 1958. He reached the majors on September 4, 1961, debuting against the Baltimore Orioles with two perfect innings and three strikeouts. Over four big-league seasons split between the Tigers and Cleveland Indians, he appeared in 88 games, going 5-8 with a 4.21 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 115 1/3 innings, and hit .278 in 18 career at-bats. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, he threw his last big-league pitch on September 19, 1965. After his playing days he returned to Dayton, serving as head baseball coach at Wright State University from 1975 to 2004; the Raiders' ballpark carries the Nischwitz name, and in 2007 he was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
