1963 Topps #103 Chuck Essegian

About Chuck Essegian
Topps still had Essegian listed with Cleveland on card #103, a first-series number, though the Indians had traded him to Kansas City on February 27, 1963, for Jerry Walker, sending him back to a club he had passed through for four games two years earlier. The season the card reports was the best of his career: .274 with 92 hits, a career-high 21 home runs and 50 RBI over 106 games, the heaviest workload of his six years.
Chuck Essegian was a right-handed-hitting outfielder and pinch hitter, born August 9, 1931, in Boston and raised in Los Angeles. At Stanford he was a twice All-Pacific Coast Conference linebacker, played in the 1952 Rose Bowl, and set an intercollegiate record with 13 home runs as a senior. He signed with Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League in 1953 and debuted for the Philadelphia Phillies on April 15, 1958, then played for the Cardinals, Dodgers, Orioles, Athletics and Indians across six big-league seasons. For the 1959 Dodgers he hit two pinch-hit home runs in the World Series against the Chicago White Sox, a Series record equaled since only by Boston's Bernie Carbo in 1975; he was also the second man after Jackie Jensen to appear in both a Rose Bowl and a World Series. He finished at .255 with 47 home runs and 150 RBI in 404 games, spent 1964 with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in Japan, and later practiced law in Southern California until retiring in 1987.
