1963 Topps #482 Felix Torres

About Felix Torres
Torres turned 31 in 1963 with tired legs, the bill for playing nearly year-round between Angels summers and Puerto Rican winters, yet he carried the heaviest workload of his career: 138 games, 122 of them at third base, and a career-high 121 hits at .261. The power drained away to 4 home runs, and umpire Joe Paparella cost him a fifth on June 16 at Minnesota by calling a long drive a ground-rule double. He drove in 51 runs, and his 32 doubles finished third in the American League. Topps card #482 carries the Los Angeles Angels and sits in the sixth series, a semi-high number. His rookie card had come a year earlier.
Felix Torres Sanchez, born May 1, 1932, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, was a right-handed-hitting third baseman signed by the Cincinnati Redlegs organization ahead of the 1955 season. He hit well in Class D ball that summer but lasted only six games at Savannah in 1956 before walking away from the American minors; later accounts point to the language barrier and the racism he met in the South. He rebuilt himself in Puerto Rican winter ball, tying for the home run lead at the 1960 Caribbean Series with three, then returned to the Cincinnati chain in 1960 with the Havana Sugar Kings. A 1961 season in the Philadelphia Phillies system at Buffalo brought no call-up, so the Los Angeles Angels claimed him in the 1961 Rule 5 draft. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, he was the Angels' regular third baseman in 1962 and 1963, then shared the position with Vic Power in 1964, finishing at .254 with 27 home runs and 153 RBI, all in an Angels uniform. Home kept him longest: he played 17 seasons in the Puerto Rican Winter League and entered the Ponce Sports Immortals Gallery in 1985. He died August 8, 2025, in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico, at 93.
