About Gene Woodling

The Mets released Woodling before the 1963 season, after he went public with his objections to how the front office handled Marv Throneberry's contract, so his playing days were behind him by the time these two cards reached candy counters. Number 43 is a first-series combination card that pairs him with Mets manager Casey Stengel; because Stengel is a Hall of Famer, the card carries the set's Hall of Fame flag, and that flag belongs to Stengel, not to Woodling, who was never elected. Number 342, from the fourth series, is a solo card with New York.

Gene Woodling was an Akron, Ohio, native who broke into the majors with Cleveland in 1943, lost 1944 and 1945 to Navy service in World War II, and bounced through Cleveland and Pittsburgh before a Minor League Player of the Year season with the San Francisco Seals put him back on the map; manager Lefty O'Doul rebuilt his stance there. As a left-handed-hitting outfielder for the Yankees from 1949 to 1954 he played on five straight World Series champions, batting .318 across those five Series with three home runs, and he led American League outfielders in fielding percentage in 1952 and 1953. He hit a career-best .321 for Cleveland in 1957, then earned his only All-Star selection and Orioles Most Valuable Player honors in 1959 at .300; Baltimore put him in its team Hall of Fame in 1992. Over 17 seasons he hit .284 with 147 home runs and 830 RBI, batting over .300 five times. He later coached first base for Baltimore under Hank Bauer from 1964 through 1967, including the 1966 championship, and scouted for the Yankees and Indians.
