About Norm Siebern

The 1963 set catches Siebern at his peak. Card #2, from the League Leaders subset, stacks the American League's top five hitters of 1962: Pete Runnels at .326, Mickey Mantle, Floyd Robinson, Chuck Hinton, and Siebern fifth at .308. Card #430 is his own Athletics card. Both rest on the best season of his career, when he played all 162 games at first base to lead the league in games played, piled up 185 hits and 114 runs, hit 25 home runs, and drove in 117, second only to Harmon Killebrew. He also drew 110 walks, led the league with a .412 on-base percentage, was Kansas City's lone pick for both of that July's All-Star Games, and finished seventh in the MVP voting.

Norman Leroy Siebern (1933-2015), born in St. Louis and a graduate of Wellston High just outside the city, was a left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Yankees, Athletics, Orioles, Angels, Giants, and Red Sox. Signed by the Yankees in 1951 out of high school, he lost 1954 and 1955 to Army service and debuted in New York on June 15, 1956. He won a Gold Glove as the Yankees' left fielder in 1958, the year he batted an even .300, and he played in three World Series (1956, 1958, 1967), collecting championship rings in 1956 and 1958. On December 11, 1959, the Yankees sent him, Hank Bauer, Don Larsen, and Marv Throneberry to Kansas City for Roger Maris, Joe DeMaestri, and Kent Hadley. Siebern settled in at first base for the Athletics, made three All-Star squads there, and peaked in 1962 with a .308 average, 25 home runs, and 117 RBIs. A November 1963 trade to Baltimore brought a fourth All-Star nod. He finished at .272 with 132 home runs and 636 RBIs.
