About Ron Moeller

A lost 1962 -- Army duty, then a knee injury -- left Moeller with one season still to play. Three shaky relief outings to open 1963 dropped him from the Angels to the Class AAA Hawaii Islanders, where he four-hit Salt Lake City on May 27. Washington, owner of the worst pitching staff in the majors, bought his contract on July 9, but an arm injury kept him idle until August 15. He went 2-0 in three starts for the Senators, the last a 6-2 win over Detroit on September 25 that closed his career. Card 541 sits in the seventh series, a high number, and it still shows him as an Angel.

Ronald Ralph Moeller was a left-handed pitcher born October 13, 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He starred at Elder High School and led his American Legion post to a 1955 national championship, and the Baltimore Orioles signed him in June 1956, shortly after graduation, luring him away from a Notre Dame athletic scholarship. He reached the majors that September at 17, and Orioles players called him The Kid for his boyish looks and his teenage debut. Sore arms and shoulder trouble then interrupted him year after year in Baltimore's farm system. The Angels took him from the Orioles in the December 1960 expansion draft, and a nationwide poll of sportswriters named him the new club's Best Young Pitcher. Army service and a knee injury wiped out his entire 1962 season. He pitched his last big league innings in 1963 for the Angels and the Washington Senators, finishing 6-9 with a 5.78 ERA across four seasons. He later sold automotive products, rising to sales manager, and died in his native Cincinnati on November 2, 2009.
