About Tom Satriano

Satriano's first Topps card, #548, is a series-7 high number in the 1963 set and his recognized rookie card, pictured with the Los Angeles Angels. It follows a 1962 spent mostly at Triple-A Hawaii, where he batted .266 with a career-best 21 home runs before a September recall. Back with the Angels, he ran off four straight hits and three RBI in a September 26 start against Detroit, and manager Bill Rigney called his the quickest hands on the squad.

Tom Satriano was born August 28, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Los Angeles, starring at Loyola High School before enrolling at the University of Southern California. He was an All-American third baseman in 1960 and set an NCAA record with 10 hits in the five-game title series of the Trojans' 1961 championship run. He signed with the expansion Los Angeles Angels in July 1961 for a $50,000 bonus and debuted July 23. Sent to Nashville in 1963 to try catching, he made his major-league catching debut that September and worked 321 of his 674 games behind the plate. His best year was 1968, when he set career highs in hits, home runs and RBI and was voted the Angels' Most Valuable Player. A June 1969 trade for Joe Azcue sent him to Boston, where he closed a ten-year career with a .225 average, 21 home runs and 157 RBI. Known as 'Satch' and 'Tommy Trojan,' he later ran the consulting firm Satriano and Hilton for 25 years.
