About this card
This is one of the eleven combination cards in the 1963 Topps set (#18, 43, 68, 138, 173, 218, 242, 306, 331, 392, 412), each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
Topps paired catcher Johnny Romano and outfielder/first baseman Tito Francona as Tribe Thumpers, saluting the run production the two Cleveland Indians had just delivered. Romano was coming off a career year: 25 home runs and 81 RBIs in 1962, his second straight All-Star season. Francona, shifted from left field to first base for 1962, led American League first basemen in double plays while continuing to hit for extra bases in Cleveland's lineup, following an All-Star 1961 in which he batted .301 with 85 RBIs. Card #392 falls in Topps' fifth series for 1963.
Johnny Romano was a stocky, sure-handed Cleveland catcher who set a franchise home run record for the position and made back-to-back All-Star teams in 1961 and 1962 before a broken finger and late-career trades to Chicago and St. Louis wound down his ten-year run. Tito Francona was a well-traveled outfielder and first baseman who hit .363 for the 1959 Indians, out-hitting the American League batting champion but falling short of qualifying; he led the AL in doubles in 1960 and was the father of manager Terry Francona.
