1963 Topps #334 Wynn Hawkins

About Wynn Hawkins
Hawkins closes out his Topps run at 334, a fourth-series card. What earns it a second look is the team line: it has him with the New York Mets, and he never threw a pitch for them. Cleveland sold him to New York on November 27, 1962, and the Mets shipped him back to the Indians organization before the end of 1963 spring training, even though he had thrown well that March. His last big league outing had come June 9, 1962, against Boston, in a season Army service had cut back to three relief appearances. He finished up in Cleveland's farm system and retired after 1964.
Wynn Firth Hawkins was a right-handed pitcher born February 20, 1936, in East Palestine, Ohio. A New Waterford High School star, he was signed by Cleveland as an amateur free agent in 1955 while at Baldwin-Wallace, where his professional contract barred him from the baseball team, so he played three seasons of basketball instead and was elected to the school's athletic hall of fame in 2003. Hawkins made his major league debut on April 22, 1960, the first New Waterford graduate to reach the majors, and pitched for the Indians through 1962, going 12-13 with a 4.17 ERA and one save in 48 games, 30 of them starts. He is best remembered for surrendering Ted Williams's 500th career home run on June 17, 1960. He later said he tore a tendon in his shoulder after joining a neighborhood snowball fight following a heavy snow, and that his career ended right as it was really starting; he pitched in the minors through 1964 without returning to the big leagues. Hawkins went on to scout for Cleveland, serve as the club's traveling secretary and sell season tickets. He died February 11, 2021, at his home in Canfield, Ohio. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
