1964 Topps #268 Bill's Got It - Danny Murtaugh / Bill Virdon
On this card: Danny Murtaugh, Bill Virdon

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1964 Topps set, each gathering two or more players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
Card 268 pairs the Pirates' skipper with his former center fielder, saluting the club that won the 1960 World Series. Danny Murtaugh, entering his eighth season at the helm after that championship, built his lineup around defense and speed, while Bill Virdon anchored center field at Forbes Field, covering the park's huge power alleys and turning bloopers and long drives alike into outs, a knack that had already earned him a 1962 Gold Glove. Murtaugh had pushed Virdon toward instructing and coaching even as a player, a relationship the two men shared going back to Murtaugh's 1957 arrival as manager. Both men wore Pittsburgh uniforms on this print series 3 card issued in 1964, as Topps paired the field boss with the glove that helped clinch his 1960 title.
A .254-hitting second baseman who became a Pittsburgh institution, Danny Murtaugh managed the Pirates in four separate stints, won World Series titles in 1960 and 1971, and had his number 40 retired the spring after he died. Bill Virdon - Pittsburgh's center fielder for a decade and the 1955 National League Rookie of the Year, a Gold Glove outfielder whom Bob Prince nicknamed Quail, and a quiet key to the Pirates' 1960 World Series upset of the Yankees.
