About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
Woodward spent his first full major league season with the Braves in 1964, appearing in 77 games and batting .209 while splitting time at second base and shortstop behind veterans Frank Bolling and Denis Menke. His 1964 Topps card, number 378, is a Rookie Stars issue from the fifth print series shared with Jack Smith, and it stands as his recognized rookie card. A defense-first infielder for the Braves and Reds from 1963 to 1971, Woody Woodward later became a major league general manager, running front offices in New York, Philadelphia, and Seattle.
Milwaukee acquired Smith from the Dodgers in the 1963 Rule 5 draft, and 1964 gave him his most extended MLB trial: 22 relief appearances through the season's first three months. He earned his first major league win on April 28 against Pittsburgh and held the Giants hitless over three innings on June 12. After a June 21 outing against Houston he was sent to Triple-A Denver and never returned. His card, Topps 1964 series 5 #378, a recognized rookie card, is a Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Braves prospect Woody Woodward. Jack Smith was a hard-throwing right-hander who reached the majors with the Dodgers in September 1962 after an MVP season at Triple-A Omaha, then closed his career with the 1964 Milwaukee Braves.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1964 Topps #378 card?
It is card #378 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Woody Woodward and Jack Smith.
Is 1964 Topps #378 a rookie card?
Yes - #378 is the rookie card of Woody Woodward. Jack Smith had already appeared on an earlier Topps card, so it is not his rookie card.
Why is #378 harder to find?
It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.
How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?
587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
